Rich Roots
The roots of our company originated before World War II (WWII). In 1939, we began as a garden and landscape company. In 1942, operations were suspended for WWII, and then revitalized in 1946 to a Landscape and Nursery Company.

William Woodruff, our current owner, worked with the company while attending Purdue University from 1951-1955, majoring in Horticulture, Agronomy, and landscape design. In 1958, Woodruff started the commercial nursery division, now known as LaPorte County Nursery.

Meanwhile, LaPorte County Landscaping Services grew into a large commercial landscaping company; and, by 1974, Woodruff added an additional 120 nursery acres to the commercial nursery division.

The total commercial nursery acreage began expanding into the wholesale nursery field when Brian Bunge, a 1977 Purdue Horticultural graduate, became nursery manager. Bunge helped expand the nursery with his propagation skills in own-root hardwoods.  His exposure in the International Plant Propagators Association as a speaker gave him the opportunity to expand his wholesale nursery skills, while communicating with some of the world’s finest propagators.

Learn about the rich history of LaPorte County Nursery, a wholesale nursery / commercial nursery specializing in wholesale plants for a variety of soil types. For over fifty years, we have been a wholesale plant nursery also offering landscaping services. We are a member of the International Plant Propagators Society, American Nursery and Landscape Association, and Indiana Nursery Association.

Proud To Be Part Of The GREEN Industry
LaPorte County Nursery has always been green - and is proud to support the “green industry”.  Our wholesale nursery division has always strived to protect the environment through such effective measures as installing erosion control dikes and recycling runoff water. Cover crops are planted on land in a rotation cycle with wholesale nursery crops.

Even our commercial nursery office is “green!” We converted an old building, originally designed to be an interim train station in the early 1900’s, into a design that fits naturally into the local environment. We reused lumber, bricks, metal siding and windows from other local buildings. Rarely does a new customer walk into our office and not comment on how interesting the building truly is.

On our main wholesale nursery property, one of our buildings was constructed in 1836 as a way station and tavern on the stage coach line between South Bend, Indiana and Joliet, Illinois.

Construction was completed using hand-hewed posts and beams still pegged with wooden pegs. This building has been restored using lumber milled from the site, as has our office and other buildings on our wholesale plant nursery property.
